Happy Chinese New Year of the Dog!

Dear Global China Institute/CCPN Global members and friends,

As the Year of the Dog 2018 starts barking, as usual it is our pleasure to send you our best wishes for the year and take the opportunity to give you an update on our situation and activities, with links to our websites. We hope that you will continue to lend us your valued support, interest, and participation in our activities.

Aims: Global China Institute (GCI, an affiliate member of The Academy of Social Sciences, UK registered charity No.: 1154640) continues to pursue the aims of CCPN Global, which was founded four years ago, to promote the study of China in comparative perspective in all aspects, and to participate in the building and governance of a global society. As a bridge between China and the rest of world, the Chinese and the non-Chinese, GCI produces both global public good and public goods with the aim of serving all mankind.

Personnel: There are seven categories of people involved in the Global China Institute’s work: 1) outsource experts – in fields such as copy editing, proofreading, typesetting, graphic design, printing, website design and maintenance, legal advice, accounting and logistical arrangements for visitors, 2) staff, 3) Editorial Board, 4) International Consultants, 5) Academic Advisory Committee , 6) Interns and Trainees, and 7) members (about 5,000 signed up, currently non-paying - follow the above links to see updates). All the people who are listed in the links above work on a voluntary basis, some playing more than one role. Through them, the Institute interacts with a great number of research and academic institutions and other organizations around the world. Without them our work would not be possible.

Structure: Global China Institute consists of CCPN Global, Journal of China in Comparative Perspective (JCCP), Global China Dialogue, Global China Press, Global China Thinktank, Global China Social Enterprise, Global China Ecommerce, and Global China Ecommerce Platform to carry out its academic and social mission. These sections of the GCI also participate in different professional activities separately as independent brands.

Offices and facilities: Global China Institute is effectively a virtual academic community, as its operation is mainly internet-based, although its offices in London and Shanghai are shared with our partners. We are constantly building and improving eight websites and eight blogs (as channels for interacting with readers), and one e-commerce platform, which allows GCI-related organizations to conduct their business and complete transactions electronically, and many WeChat groups (in Chinese). Strands of work and achievements: Through its English and Chinese bilingual websites, the only ones of their kind in the English-speaking world, and a global network of experts and professionals, we coordinate mainly five strands of work, described below.

    1. CCPN Global mainly promotes ‘China and the Chinese in comparative perspective’, via a global network and a peer-reviewed journal. 1) The CCPN Global website provides China and the Chinese in comparative perspective related resources, including research related to China and the Chinese from a comparative perspective since 2002, China and the Chinese in comparative perspective events globally since 2004 and China and the Chinese in comparative perspective related publications in different categories. The above resources are listed in English and translated partially into Chinese. A wealth of studies and publications in Chinese have come to light, e.g. China in comparative perspective on civilization from the1980s. We will continue providing this service by updating these resources and also adding related work from China. 2) Apart from producing the Chinese edition of the Journal of China in Comparative Perspective (JCCP) annually, based on China–UK encounters and transcultural practice we are continuing to publish the Chinese for Social Sciences series annually. We also founded two methodological annual series. One is Corpus Approaches to Chinese Social Sciences (CACSS), based on the post-Global China Dialogue III workshop in 2016, and our development of a project entitled ‘Emergence, status and prospects of corpus approaches to Chinese Social Sciences (CACSS) in the big data era’. The other is Computational Social Science and China, based on the project that we co-developed on the ‘Emergence, status and prospects of computational social science in the big data era’, undertaken by Wuhan University, China, which won a major project award funded by the National Social Science Fund of China (NSSFC) in 2016. All the above series are in Chinese and closely relating to ‘China and the Chinese in comparative perspective’. 3) Our major cutting-edge research project, Globalization of Chinese Social Sciences (GCSS), will also include ‘China and the Chinese in comparative perspective’.

    2. Journal of China in Comparative Perspective (JCCP), published biannually in June and December, is the only peer-reviewed academic journal for social sciences, humanities and comparative studies on China in the world. The coverage of JCCP is very broad. Based on Professor Stephan Feuchtwang’s 20 themes of the MSc course in China in Comparative Perspective, LSE founded in 2006, we have expanded to 30 themes over the last 10 years. Since its official launch at the British Academy in 2015, we have published Vol. 1 Issue 1 2015, Vol. 1 Issue 2 2015, Vol. 2 Issue 1 2016, Vol. 2 Issue 2 2016, Vol. 3 Issue 1 2017, Vol. 3 Issue 2 2017 will appear shortly, and 2 issues of Vol. 4 are in preparation. After becoming a member of Crossref, we have been issued with DOIs for JCCP, every issue and every article. It took considerable time and effort for our data to be standardized and fully integrated into their systems. We need all of you kindly to cite your own articles and the sources you use that are published in JCCP as often as possible, in order to increase our citation score, as well as network both the papers and people who share common interests. It is hoped that JCCP will be on the SSCI in 2018! Special thanks to the Department of Culture, Communication and Media (CCM), UCL Institute of Education, University College London for allowing its address to be used as the correspondence address of JCCP.

3. Global China Dialogue Series (GCDS) holds annual forums emphasizing the concepts of transculturality and social creativity in seeking to enhance public understanding of global affairs. After the success of the first three GCDs, the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China (RDCY) became a joint organizer with the Global China Institute, the Lau China Institute at King’s College London and the China Media Centre at the University of Westminster. Building upon the first three dialogues, the GCD IV was the only high-end forum in the world to take China’s ‘The Belt and Road’ as its main theme and to discuss China and Chinese participation in building a global society and the comprehensive governance of a global society. We are completing the editing of previous GCD proceedings in both English and Chinese editions. GCD V: Governance for Global Justice is scheduled for 7 December 2018 at the British Academy, and related but separate pre- and post-Dialogue events will be held on 6 and 8 December, at the University of Westminster and King’s College London, respectively.

  4. Global China Press (GCP) is the only publisher of bilingual publications from Chinese and non-Chinese perspectives on China and the world in a global context. At the 2017 London Book Fair we organized two events:

  • Launch of the English edition of Lord Michael Bates’ Walk for Peace: Transcultural Experiences in China
  • Agreement-signing ceremony with New World Press for Chinese social sciences and reference books

To date, Global China Press has published books in six book series in both English and Chinese, or English or Chinese respectively (note: as the work of updating the Global China Ecommerce Platform and inserting DOIs in every chapter is still going on, many books are not yet available online):

Please visit the Global China Press website and our bookshop at Global China Ecommerce Platform.

  5. Global China Thinktank (GCT) is a knowledge-based thinktank that exists to create a public platform for social consultancy in a global society. It aims to adduce resources from China, the Chinese and comparative studies for the fulfilment of our social mission of participating in shaping a global society. In the UK, we continue to support the Campaign for Social Sciences, and the Campaign for Languages, Speak to the Future. We are also one of the sponsors of the British Postgraduate Network for Chinese Studies Conference (BPCS). In China, we formed two collaborative relationships. One is the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), a key national information construction project, which dedicated to the mass digitalization of China knowledge resources, as well as creating the platform for global dissemination and value-added services, self-developed cutting edge Chinese digital library technologies and grid resources sharing platform, built the most comprehensive system of China academic knowledge resources--China Integrated Knowledge Resources Database, led by Tsinghua University and supported by PRC Ministry of Education, PRC Ministry of Science, PRC General Administration of Press and Publication, and the Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of China, originally launched in 1996. Another is The Agile Thinktank, China's first thinktank on management studies, founded in 2003. As the executive body of the China Management Science Society (CMSS), it uses independent analysis ability, abundant multi-disciplinary talent resources, provides consulting training, academic research, data management, platform service, capital operation and other multi-element services for enterprises, industries and governments at home and abroad.

The way ahead: With Global China Institute integrating CCPN Global’s fourth anniversary, the foundation and development of the organizational structure of the Institution are complete. From 2018 we will continue to work in a steady and sustainable fashion, as follows:

  • In line with the rapid development of technology, the back-end system of our main website will be upgraded in the summer. All materials will be published on websites, our ecommerce platform and blogs in due course. We will then be ready to promote and market the Global China Institute and its publications, especially the regular publication of JCCP.
  • We will seek to raise more funds, to continue holding the Global China Dialogue Series (GCDS) and publishing its proceedings, and to advance academic work by identifying new research topics, through our publications and by contributions to the development and implementation of policy in knowledge-based social consultations.
  • We are still working on the task of making a mirror site for all our websites in China, because access there is slow. We also intend to set up a Chinese version of our WeChat platform. Funds permitting, we will build a corpus of Chinese Social Scientific Studies in Chinese and English, as well as a bilingual web portal for China studies, including resources of China and the Chinese in comparative perspective and work by Chinese and non-Chinese scholars in English and Chinese.

We have nearly 5,000 members throughout the world, registered via our online Free Registration form and networking, and we could not function as an independent charity without their support in the form of their academic input, expertise, fees and subscriptions to our journal. We are very grateful to all of you who have supported us so far. The links for you to continue supporting are here:

With warmest regards and again best wishes for a very happy and prosperous Year of the Dog!
